Schoeller Allibert’s near-term science-based emissions reduction target validated by SBTi

SBTi near-term targets

At Schoeller Allibert, we are excited to announce that our greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets have been validated as science-based by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This significant milestone marks a crucial step in our ongoing decarbonization journey, which began in 2021 and saw a formal commitment to the SBTi in May 2023.

What this means for us and our customers

Having our targets validated by SBTi is not only a critical achievement for Schoeller Allibert but also holds substantial importance for our customers, many of whom are also committed to the SBTi. These companies are increasingly urging their supply chains to align with science-based targets, reinforcing the importance of our validation. While many packaging companies in cardboard, paper, and single-use plastics have achieved similar target validations, we are proud to be the first producer of returnable transport packaging to receive this approval.

Our Science-Based Targets

The SBTi has approved Schoeller Allibert’s near-term science-based emissions reduction targets, classifying them as a near-term target commitment. This endorsement aligns our scope 1 and 2 target ambition for 2033 with the 1.5°C trajectory, demonstrating our dedication to significant emission reductions. Our targets

  • Schoeller Allibert Services B.V. commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions  90% by 2033 from a 2020 base year.

  • Schoeller Allibert Services B.V. also commits to reduce absolute scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services, fuel- and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, and business travel 33% within the same timeframe.

Actions taken towards achieving our targets

Assessing our corporate carbon footprint and reducing GHG emissions are key components of the Schoeller Allibert sustainability strategy. Over the past several years, our focus has been on establishing a clear baseline, taking decisive action to decarbonize, and rigorously measuring our progress.

In 2023, we made substantial strides in reducing our emissions. Due to energy-saving measures in our operations and an increased use of green energy, we reduced our scope 1 and 2 emissions by 79% compared to the 2020 base year. This marked the fourth consecutive year that Schoeller Allibert collected data as required by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, underscoring our commitment to transparency and accountability.

Our Role in Mitigating the Climate Crisis

We recognize the urgent need for all industries to reduce carbon emissions to address the climate crisis. By cutting Schoeller Allibert’s emissions, we not only lessen our own environmental impact but also help our customers reduce their scope 3 emissions. This dual benefit underscores the broader significance of our efforts in combating climate change.

Looking ahead

Schoeller Allibert is dedicated to continuing our journey towards substantial emission reductions. We are committed to playing our part in mitigating the climate crisis and supporting our customers in their sustainability goals. The validation of our near-term targets by SBTi is a testament to our unwavering commitment to a sustainable future. Please read more about this in our sustainability report of 2023

More about The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) is a corporate climate action organization that enables companies and financial institutions worldwide to play their part in combating the climate crisis.

They develop standards, tools and guidance which allow companies to set greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets in line with what is needed to keep global heating below catastrophic levels and reach net-zero by 2050 at the latest. The latest climate science from the IPCC - described by the UN as “code red for humanity” - shows it is still possible to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, but we are dangerously close to that threshold.

The SBTi is incorporated as a charity, with a subsidiary which will host our target validation services. Our partners are CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).
